As a late-diagnosed woman with ADHD, I often felt drained and unwell trying to fit into a conventional work environment. Without reasonable adjustments, I spent a lot of energy just trying to make others comfortable, which could have been better spent improving our service and patient experience.

When I started my current job, I decided to be open about my experiences, including both my struggles and strengths. Thankfully, my line manager was supportive and referred me to Occupational Health. The clinician I spoke with was patient and understanding. Together, we developed a plan for reasonable adjustments.

These adjustments have been empowering, providing a support net that helps prevent the mental burden of working in an unsustainable manner. Although I'm still adjusting to my new role, I believe these changes will boost my confidence and improve my work output over time.
The most significant impact of the support I received has been feeling listened to and taken seriously for the first time in my life. While the adjustments haven't drastically changed my work yet, the process has been worth the effort. I would encourage others not to be deterred by initial challenges and to seek support from their managers.

Advice for Others:
Being open and vulnerable at work can be difficult, but with my recent experience being so positive, I would say that it's worth the risk. Society often makes us feel misunderstood, but there are people ready to listen and support us. If you're struggling, try reaching out for help. We no longer have to struggle alone or silently.
