Biography
Elizabeth qualified as a State Registered Nurse at the Central Middlesex Hospital in north west London. She initially gained experience in diabetes care as a Senior Staff Nurse on the Professorial Medical unit at St Bartholomew’s Hospital.
In 1990 Elizabeth took up the post of Clinical Research Nurse with Professor John Yudkin, in the Department of Medicine University College London, on the Archway Campus. She worked with medical and scientific colleagues on diabetes and cardiovascular research and developed a special interest in hypertension in diabetes, undertaking several research studies.
Working with medical colleagues Elizabeth set up the Nurse-Led Hypertension Clinic in the Diabetes Outpatient Clinic in June 2000. The clinic has been shown to improve the blood pressure control of patients under our care, and thus lower the risk of them developing cardiovascular; renal and eye disease. She spends a lot of the time explaining to patients what is meant by high blood pressure, how lifestyle changes can improve blood pressure control and what types of treatment are available. Elizabeth is a qualified Non-Medical Prescriber and is therefore able to initiate; “titrate”; or stop medications for the patients attending her clinic.
Elizabeth and Dr Barnard are now working to expand the model of this clinic into Primary Care, to extend the improvement in blood pressure care patients receive. She was recently give a ‘Highly Commended’ Certificate in the nursing section of the hospital Good Practice Awards for her work in the Nurse-Led Hypertension Clinic.
Elizabeth continues her research post at UCL and finds the mixture of research and clinical nursing very stimulating. It provides a great opportunity for research based practice in relation to the management of hypertension.
