DIY screening kits for bowel cancer

DIY screening kits for bowel cancerOn Wednesday 23 January an NHS Bowel Cancer Screening event came to Whittington's Level 1 atrium. The initiative went live in 2007 in Haringey, Islington, Enfield and Barnet and is the first cancer home screening programme for men.

Both men and women aged 60 to 69 are being sent testing kits that are easy for home completion and will identify those people who need further testing. The kits are able to detect even pre cancerous changes which puts individuals with a high chance of success and complete cure.

Nutritional advisors from the community kitchens project were also on-site to promote healthy eating and the affects this can also have on minimising the risks of bowel cancer. As a new programme it is important that awareness is raised and there will be a presentation on the topic for clinicians on 29 February. Look out for more information on this.
