We’re excited to have begun a pioneering partnership with workforce management platform Lantum so we can change the way our organisation runs rotas and schedules junior doctor shifts.
Beginning in October we'll see the technology used in three departments (Obs & Gynae, Surgery & Cancer and Emergency & Integrated Medicine) and then looking towards rolling this new approach to other departments over the coming year.

Introducing the AI-powered doctor rota builder
Lantum's In-Genius product is a first-of-its-kind rota builder that offers a new way of scheduling.
In-Genius uses AI to create custom, contract compliant rotas that take into account the needs of our staff.
For example, it will take into account a person's:
- Leave requirements
- Working patterns (e.g. if the junior doctor works part time)
- Working preferences (for example if they need Wednesday evenings off for child caring commitments or football practice).
It then combines this information with a department's rules, like shift times and safe staffing levels.
And then using AI, it calculates how to accommodate as many of these requests while generating the most optimal and safest rota for the department.
It delivers what until now has been impossible – a much fairer rota that fit doctors’ lives and reduce gaps to keep departments safely staffed.
We’re also streamlining rota, leave and swaps management
Departments running an In-Genius rota will also be using Lantum's rota management tool In-Flight. In-Flight lets you manage leave, swaps and the rota on one app – making sure the schedule is always up to date, and everyone is automatically notified of any changes.
No more downloading Excel sheets to check your annual leave! This app will save time, stress and make the whole process much simpler.
Created by doctors, for doctors
We’re proud that the In-Genius technology is homegrown within Whittington Health, as the prototype was created by a team of our paediatric registrars, led by Dr Priyen Shah.
That’s why it’s so effective at meeting doctors’ needs and why we’re excited to be the first Trust to implement it.
Results of a trial period at our trust
We’ve already completed several trials of the software at our organisation already with In-Genius and they have shown amazing results so far.
For the paediatric registrar rota in July covering 3 sites and 2 on-call sites we saw:
- 70-100% of each clinician’s leave requests were incorporated into the rota without the need for swaps or temporary staffing (average of 90%).
- Savings of £65,000 on temporary staffing spend.
We also saw rota gaps reduced by 67%, going from:
- 90 nights to 45.
- 39.5 weekday long days to 0.
- 16.3 weekend long days to 8.
