Diabetes in Pregnancy

Midwife on Labour ward
We provide care for women and birthing people who have diabetes diagnosed in pregnancy, or with pre-existing diabetes.

Most people we see are diagnosed with diabetes in pregnancy during routine tests. You may be offered a screening test if you have a higher chance of developing diabetes. If you are diagnosed with diabetes, you will be transferred to the antenatal diabetes team for the rest of your maternity care.

The clinic is jointly run by our obstetric and diabetes doctors. The multidisciplinary team also includes midwives, diabetes specialist nurses and dietitians, who are all specialists in diabetes care in pregnancy. We endeavour to tailor our care based on your clinical needs.

Midwife Clinics

Diabetes clinics run by our diabetes specialist midwife and high-risk midwife are held Monday to Friday at The Whittington Hospital.

Group sessions for planning your pregnancy
It is important for women and birthing people with diabetes to plan their pregnancies and have good blood sugar control before becoming pregnant. We run group sessions for people with diabetes, and their partners, to discuss and prepare for pregnancy. Individual pre-pregnancy appointments are also available.

Referral

If you have pre-existing diabetes, please refer yourself once you know you are pregnant.   Please call 020 7288 3531 or email whh-tr.Diabetes-Midwifery@nhs.net.
