Maternal Medicine

We provide care for women and birthing people who have medical conditions and are either pregnant or planning pregnancy.
Embarking on a pregnancy with pre-existing medical conditions may seem daunting or confusing. Sometimes you can be diagnosed with a medical condition during your pregnancy. You may have questions about your condition, your medication or the effects on your pregnancy and birth.
Our service is part of the North Central London maternal medicine network, which has been established to provide timely specialist care and advice before during and after pregnancy to women with medical conditions. For more information, visit ttps://nclondonmaternalmedicine.nhs.uk/
We offer advice and treatment before, during and after pregnancy, including birthing guidance/to ensure your needs are met, our team combines the expertise of:
- Obstetricians (pregnancy specialists)
- Obstetric physicians (general medical specialists trained in medical disorders related to pregnancy)
- Haematologists (medical doctors specialising in blood disorders such as sickle cell disease, thalassaemia and blood clots)
- High-risk midwives (midwives with experience caring for women and birthing people with medical complexity)
We work closely with other specialist doctors within the Whittington Hospital, so your care is consistent during pregnancy. We will also make sure you can transition smoothly out of our service back to your regular maternity team after giving birth.
Pre-pregnancy planning (also known as pre-conception counselling)
If you have a medical condition, you should plan for your pregnancy before becoming pregnant. Our team can support you to manage your condition for pregnancy and address any questions you may have.
