GP Advice
Visits to a GP are free, but you need to make an appointment with them after registering.
Before you make an appointment with your GP, consider if there are any alternative such as, visiting your local pharmacy and having a discussion with a pharmacist.
*Don’t forget pharmacists are highly trained healthcare professionals and can offer a wider range of health services than you think.
Appointments
Your GP surgery should be able to offer you an appointment at a time convenient to you to see a GP or another health professional quickly, if necessary.
This may be at your practice or at another NHS location during the day, in the evening or at the weekend.
If it is not urgent, you should be able to book an appointment in advance.
Booking an appointment online
Many GPs now offer online services, which allow you to book or cancel your appointments, or order repeat prescriptions. Some surgeries are also introducing new ways to consult a GP or health professional, including online and over the phone.
When you register with a GP find out from the reception how they manage their bookings, do you need to call to book an appointment or can it be done online.
Some GP surgeries change how they manage bookings, if this is the case you should be contacted to let you know of the changes.
