About the 48 Hour Triage for Wheeze and Asthma

In July 2018 the Paediatric Primary Care (PPC) team initiated a Quality Improvement project where the team would deliver a 48 hour review via the telephone for children and young people that had attended Accident & Emergency for Wheeze or Asthma at the Whittington Hospital or University College London Hospital.

The 48 Hour Wheeze and Asthma Review requires that children and young people are assessed within two working days by a health care professional, following an attendance at an Accident & Emergency Department. This is to ensure that the patient’s condition has not deteriorated, that the treatment is working and to improve Wheeze and Asthma control.

Inclusion Criteria for the PPC 48 Hour Review

  • We only accept referrals from Whittington Hospital or University College London Hospital (UCLH).
  • The child or young person must be aged between 18 months and 18 years old.
  • The child or young person must be registered with an Islington GP.
  • The reason for the A&E attendance must be Wheeze or Asthma.

Referrals to the Paediatric Primary Care 48 Hour Review service are received automatically from Whittington and UCLH A&E departments by email.
