Jeffery Kelson Unit JKU

The Jeffery Kelson Unit (JKU) is a friendly environment to work in, with good multi-disciplinary teams and big plans for the future.

The JKU consists of three adjoining wards (Meyrick, Cavell and Cloudesley) offering care and rehabilitation for older people, and people who have had a stroke.

The occupational therapy team shares a large office space with physiotherapy colleagues on the JKU, with whom they work closely together on rehabilitation and discharge planning.  There are therapeutic facilities situated on the JKU, including a shared gym, an assessment kitchen area and a group meeting room.

There are six and a half members of the JKU OT team – the senior I and senior II work on stroke rehabilitation on Cloudesley, with two basic grades working on Meyrick and Cavell.  We are lucky to have two part-time technicians supporting the team, and a senior II therapist to help with the medical patients on Cloudesley.

Recently, we have set up breakfast groups for stroke and elderly patients; and when fully staffed, run groups targetting people with dementia and frequent fallers.  In conjunction with our neurophysiotherapy colleagues, we run a weekly hand group on Cloudesley ward, and also have weekly goal-setting sessions.  We are also piloting a Stroke Carers’ Support Group, which is proving popular, and hope we can offer this in the future as a regular addition to the service.
