New nurses join our emergency department

Eight new emergency care nurses have joined our emergency department (ED). The new nurses will directly support and care for the 96,000* children and adults who come into the ED each year at The Whittington Hospital.

The new nurses will reduce the department’s use of agency staff, enhancing the quality of service for patients in ED, as they work together as a permanent team, familiar with how the Trust and department works.

Our team has a record of  meeting the national target of seeing 95 per cent of patients within four hours and this year was in the top four trusts within London for its performance in both quarter one (April-June) and two (July-September).

Fiona Long, lead nurse in the emergency department, said: “We pride ourselves in providing high quality care to our local community, alongside ensuring that we meet the national four hour care standard. This further investment within the nursing team will ensure we can build on our successes and have the right level of care available for patients when they need it most.”

One of the new nurses is Hayley Johnson, who started working in the department in October, she said: “Being a nurse in a London hospital is something I have always wanted to do. Working within the emergency team here I see such a variety of patients and there are many opportunities to learn.

“It’s a busy department, but the team are both supportive and dedicated to making a difference – I’m pleased to be part of The Whittington Hospital team.”

The Trust is also starting some redevelopment work within ED to improve the environment for patients. New treatment and assessment areas will be created, supporting staff to see patients quicker when they arrive. Further work will take place next year to improve the resuscitation and critical areas.
