Statement on Halal meat in the Whittington Hospital canteen

15 Aug 2018

A statement from Whittington Health NHS Trust on a supplier serving non-Halal meat in the Whittington Hospital canteen.

Full story

Earlier this summer, our catering supplier, Sodexo, informed us that non-Halal chicken was served at the Yard Bird counter in the Whittington Hospital canteen and that signs were not updated to make this clear.

We immediately asked Sodexo to carry out an investigation so that we could understand when and how this had happened.

Sodexo have now informed us that the non-Halal chicken was served on six dates earlier this year:

  • 22 January 2018
  • 13 March 2018
  • 16 March 2018
  • 5 April 2018
  • 8 May 2018
  • 11 May 2018

The chicken was served at the Yard Bird counter in the hospital canteen – the issue did not affect any other counters or meals served to patients in hospital beds.

Our facilities team are now working with Sodexo to ensure that this does not happen again. We have notified Trading Standards and will be reviewing our relationship with Sodexo.

In the meantime, Sodexo have assured us that they have taken action with staff involved in these incidents. We are meeting with them regularly to get assurance that their suppliers have Halal certificates and that their staff are appropriately trained and will be undertaking spot checks to ensure that they are complying with their signs about the food they serve and with their contract.

We would like to apologise sincerely to anyone who may have been affected by these incidents and to assure you that we are taking action with Sodexo to ensure that it does not happen again.

Anyone seeking information from Sodexo can contact them on 020 7404 0110.
