Where Do I Start (Part 2) Transcript

In our part 1 video we talked about some of the key things that could help you and your child with communicating and interacting well together.

But you might be thinking well where do I start?

If your child shows sensory differences you might first want to look at our team’s video called sensory needs.

You can find this video on our website within the advice and strategies section.

Within that video are some ideas on how to support your child with meeting their sensory needs and in feeling more well regulated.

The next thing to focus on is strengthening fundamental skills that underlie all communication and interaction.

One of these is being able to share attention or jointly attend to something with another person.

If two people are not paying attention to each other, to the same toy, activity or experience then it is difficult for them to communicate and interact together.

To find out more please go to the advice and strategies part of our team website, click on the communication section and then have a look at the section called ‘Shared attention in play’ to find out more.

The communication section of our team’s website also contains a section on how you can help your child understand what you are trying to communicate to them.

There’s also a section on the website about how you can help your child to communicate their wants and needs to you and others, as well as communicating many other things too.

Once you have started to use some new strategies try and notice small positive changes in your child’s communication and interaction, as these will gradually build towards bigger changes.

For example, noticing that maybe your child has gone from crying when they want something to then being able to look towards what they want.

Keep consistent!

Strategies rarely work immediately but with consistent use you can often see change.

If you want further help and your child is currently being supported by our team, then please book on to one of our communication next steps sessions, by going to our website, so if you type ‘Islington Social Communication Team’ into your search field, then on the website, click on the “Next Steps After Diagnosis” button, and there will be a list of the dates at the bottom of that page of upcoming ‘Communication’ Next Steps sessions and at the very bottom there is a link to click on to complete a booking form to attend a particular session.
