Nursing and Health Care Assistance

The school nursing team is comprised of Specialist School Nurses, Paediatric nurses and Health Care Assistants. Together we work with the school to ensure the health needs of the children are met. We also work closely with the community paediatrician and the therapy teams based at the schools.
The healthcare assistants support the nurses to deliver the following services to the schools, families and students:
- Providing advice and support to parents, children and school staff on medical conditions, emotional health and physical health and wellbeing
- Supporting families and the school staff with the medical needs of the children including seizure management, respiratory management, allergies, asthma, gastrostomy feeding and medicine management
- Co-ordinating and delivering the school immunisation programme
- Monitoring your child’s growth and development
- Signposting you and your child to the appropriate services for support with your child’s health
- Writing of individual health care plans for those students who have additional medical needs
- Training for the school staff, families and young people to ensure the health care plans are delivered within the school setting
- Liaison with other health professionals involved in your child’s care such as GP’s, specialist doctors and nurses
- Health and wellbeing sessions with your child (height, weight, healthy eating, general wellbeing)
- Health promotion
