Delirium
Many people with physical health problems also experience delirium or 'acute confusional states'.
Delirium can be caused by a range of medical conditions such as:
- Chest or urine infections
- Poor nutrition
- Dehydration
- Constipation
It can also occur following surgery or as a side-effect of medication. It often starts suddenly, but usually improves when the condition causing it is treated and gets better.
Delirium can be frightening – not only for the person who is unwell, but also for those around him or her. It is important to seek treatment as soon as possible.
Delirium is very common in intensive care because the patients are so ill.
