Maria also works in Endocrinology, manages medical inpatients and admits emergencies on the busy acute on-calls. She has a busy schedule of teaching, including lecturing and providing educational visits to the diabetes firm for local GPs, Practice Nurses, foreign elective medical students and International Diabetes Federation Fellows. She also undertakes service-based research, for example around hypertension management and diabetes self-management in diabetes. She takes part in multicentre studies, including assessment of new technologies and insulins in diabetes.

Biography

Dr Maria Barnard trained at Bristol University Medical School. She completed most of her clinical training in London and spent a period of time in research at The Hammersmith Hospital and at Yale University, USA.

Maria joined The Whittington Hospital in 1998. She was appointed as the Lead Consultant Physician in Diabetes and worked with the diabetes team to improve patient services. This included guidelines for diabetes management, developing a clinical diabetes database and appointment of new medical and nursing staff. She works closely with both Islington and Haringey PCT teams, to implement the standards of the Diabetes National Service Framework. She is involved in work to develop diabetes eye screening services in Camden and Islington.

Special Interests

Maria has a special interest in diabetes management in young adults, in adolescents (combined clinic with Dr Joe Raine, Consultant Paediatrician) and in renal disease in diabetes (combined clinic with Dr Robin Woolfson, Consultant Nephrologist). As Consultant Physician in Endocrinology, Maria sees patients with endocrine problems and particularly thyroid disease and thyroid nodules requiring biopsy.
